Example: The letter A

The ASCII decimal value for A is 65.

65 can be represented using:

64 + 1 = 65

Therefore the bits for 64 and 1 are switched on.

Converting binary to decimal

Take the binary number and add together the place values where there is a 1.

01001000

0×128 + 1×64 + 0×32 + 0×16 + 1×8 + 0×4 + 0×2 + 0×1

= 64 + 8

= 72
